Calling all budding artists!! Grades Pre-K through fifth are invited to participate in "Kids being
Kind to Critters is Cool"an art contest presented by Hand ~N~ Paw and Art for Paws.
The contest is in celebration of American Humane Association's "Be Kind to Animals" week,
May 3rd through May 9th. American Humane Association has been hosting this event since
1915.
The participating children are encouraged to use their favorite medium, whether it is oil paints,
charcoal, color pencils, pen and ink, acrylics, water colors, pencil, or even crayon & markers!
Artwork should be done on an 8.5 x 11.5 piece of paper. The subject of their piece is to portray
what it means to them to be kind to animals. Kindness ranges from :
- spay/neuter .
- veterinary care: taking your pet to the vet at least once a year for the appropriate vaccines
and checkup;
- food/water appropriate for the pet (ie dog, cat, bird,bunny);
- exercise: a safe place to play and to take the pet for walks always using a leash;
- proper identification: a tag with the family's contact information, a microchip or a collar
with the pet's name and your telephone number
- a warm bed and dry place to sleep;
- and love.
A brief paragraph on the back of the artwork should be included. It should explain the piece and
what the child thinks it means to be kind to animals. This can be very brief. Also, include the
child's name, grade and teacher's name.
Teachers are encouraged to take this opportunity to incorporate this contest in with their
character education lessons.
Topics of discussion could be:
respect:
by not petting the dog or cat when he is sleeping or eating , the child is showing respect.
responsibility:
the child is responsible for their pet by taking the pet to the vet for check ups and vaccines, or
exercising the pet, or having the pet spayed/neutered.
kindness:
by adopting an animal from a shelter or rescue group and giving that animal a second chance at
a happy life.
